ARNDT BECK, born in 1973, works as a freelance artist in disciplines as diverse as photography, drawing, and text. As the heir to the estate of HELMUT J. PSOTTA, Beck also sees themself as a mediator of Psotta’s work. Beck has been intensively engaged with the Yiddish language for several years and initiated the exhibitions and event series of YIDDISH BERLIN since 2019. As of 2025, Beck is part of a transnational research group on the work of the Yiddish poet Avrom Nokhem Stencl.
Beck grew up in the Lower Rhine/West Germany — Christian elementary school, secondary school certificate, abandoned a carpenter apprenticeship, left the church, advanced technical college certificate, singer and guitarist in local rock bands — moved for alternative service to Cologne and in 1995 to Berlin. Beck started theatre acting and had a 5 months stay in South America. As largely an autodidact, Beck found Helmut J. Psotta to be the decisive artistic mentor at the end of the 1990s. In Berlin they worked together from 1999 to 2009 on the photo essay AUTOPSY 2000 — HISTORY IN STILLSTAND.
Text production soon supplemented photography, in 2009 the book THE BURIED NATION was published. During a stay in Kaliningrad, spring 2010, Beck started working on the photo essay KALININGRAD WITHOUT NOSTALGIA. Several stays in Kaliningrad followed.
Beck’s photographic interest shifted increasingly to Eastern Central Europe. Beck traveled a lot, worked on several exhibitions in cooperation with the European University Viadrina and exhibited Max Popov’s photo collection on Königsberg/Kaliningrad for the first time in Germany. Beck summarized their own photographic work from 2008 — 2014 in the three-part exhibition EKSKURSIONISTIKA.
With the death of Psotta in December 2012, Beck also took responsibility for the estate of their partner and teacher. In 2015 Beck curated an exhibition of Psotta’s early works in Bottrop, in 2017 _ROSA PARAPHRASES in Braunschweig. In November 2022, Beck combined their own work with Psotta’s under the title MIR ZENEN DO! in Berlin.
In 2020/21 Beck created the Berlin photo series STADT | WAND | SCHLUSS (Berlin Overdose), followed by the collage series … AND LONGING ACCOMPANIES US. From a research trip from July to September 2023, the photographic work A WINTER IN SANTIAGO DE CHILE emerged. In addition to the photos, research on Psotta’s stays in Latin America was presented for the first time under the title ARTE SACRO Y SUBVERSIÓN at the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Cerillos in Santiago de Chile.
Since around 2014, two key areas of artistic production have complemented Beck’s previous fields of activity: drawing and the Yiddish language. In 2019, Beck initiated the group YIDDISH BERLIN and organized the exhibitions DI FARBLOYTE FEDER in August 2019 and January 2020. In November 2020, the book IN SODOM, designed and edited by Beck, was published. In May 2022 this was succeeded by the exhibition MAGEYFE | MILKHOME | MAME-LOSHN (Plague | War | Mother Tongue) featuring current works, and the shows AVROM NOKHEM STENCL (2023 with Rachel Lichtenstein) and NATO IN YIDDISHLAND (2024 with Yevgeniy Fiks), both curated by Beck.
As of 2025, Beck is part of a transnational research group on the work of Yiddish poet Avrom Nokhem Stencl, who spent crucial years of his life (1921–1936) in Berlin. In addition, based on unexplored Yiddish sources, Beck is working on a collective artistic exploration project named MILI on the anarcha-feminist activist Milly Witkop, which was presented in an exhibition in November 2025 with the support of the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Project Fund.

ARNDT BECK, geboren 1973, arbeitet als freie:r Künstler:in in so unterschiedlichen Disziplinen wie Fotografie, Zeichnung und Text. Als Erb:in des Nachlasses von HELMUT J. PSOTTA sieht Beck sich ebenfalls als Mittler:in von dessen Werk. Beck befasst sich zudem seit einigen Jahren intensiv mit jiddischer Sprache und initiierte ab 2019 die Ausstellungen und Veranstaltungsreihen von YIDDISH BERLIN, seit 2025 ist Beck zudem Teil einer transnationalen Forscher:innengruppe zum Werk des jiddischen Dichters Avrom Nochem Stenzl.
Beck wuchs am Niederrhein/NRW auf, — evangelische Grundschule, Realschulabschluss, abgebrochene Tischlerlehre, Kirchenaustritt, Fachabitur, Sänger:in und Gitarrist:in in lokalen Rockbands —, ging zum Zivildienst nach Köln und 1995 nach Berlin. Theaterspiel, Südamerikaaufenthalt. Als weitgehende:r Autodidakt:in findet Beck in Psotta Ende der 90er Jahre den entscheidenden künstlerischen Mentor. Von 1999 bis 2009 erarbeiten sie gemeinsam den Fotoessay AUTOPSIE 2000 — STILLSTAND DER GESCHICHTE.
Die Textproduktion ergänzt bald die Fotografie, 2009 erscheint das Buch DIE BEERDIGTE NATION, mit zahlreichen Fotos. Während eines Aufenthalts in Kaliningrad erarbeitet Beck im Frühjahr 2010 den Fotoessay KALININGRAD OHNE HEIMWEH.
Becks fotografisches Interesse verlagert sich zunehmend nach Ostmitteleuropa. Beck reist viel, erarbeitet in Kooperation mit der Europa-Universität Viadrina mehrere Ausstellungen und zeigt Max Popovs Fotosammlung zu Königsberg/Kaliningrad erstmals in Deutschland. Die eigene fotografische Arbeit der Jahre 2008 — 2014 fasst Beck in der dreiteiligen Ausstellung EKSKURSIONISTIKA zusammen.
Mit dem Tode Psottas Ende 2012 übernimmt Beck auch die Verantwortung für den Nachlass des Partners und Lehrers. Im Jahr 2015 zeigt Beck das Frühwerk in dessen Heimatstadt Bottrop, 2017 die Ausstellung _ROSA PARAPHRASEN in Braunschweig. Im November 2022 kombiniert Beck eigene mit Psottas Arbeiten unter dem Titel MIR ZENEN DO! in Berlin.
2020/21 entsteht die Berliner Fotoarbeit STADT | WAND | SCHLUSS, von Ende 2020 bis Ende 2021 außerdem die Collageserie … UND SEHNSUCHT UNS BEGLEITET. Während einer Recherchereise von Juli bis September 2023 entsteht die Fotoarbeit EIN WINTER IN SANTIAGO DE CHILE, außerdem werden neben den Fotos die Recherchen zu Psottas Lateinamerikaaufenthalten unter dem Titel ARTE SACRO Y SUBVERSIÓN im Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Cerillos in Santiago de Chile erstmals präsentiert.
Zwei wesentliche Schwerpunkte der künstlerischen Produktion ergänzen ab etwa 2014 Becks bisherige Tätigkeitsfelder: Zeichnung und jiddische Sprache. 2019 initiiert Beck die Gruppe YIDDISH BERLIN und veranstaltet im August 2019 und im Januar 2020 die Ausstellungen DI FARBLOYTE FEDER. Im November 2020 erscheint das Buch IN SODOM, gestaltet von Beck. Im Mai 2022 folgt die Ausstellung MAGEYFE | MILKHOME | MAME-LOSHN mit aktuellen Arbeiten, danach die von Beck kuratierten Shows AVROM NOKHEM STENCL (2023 mit Rachel Lichtenstein) und NATO IN YIDDISHLAND (2024 mit Yevgeniy Fiks). Seit 2025 ist Beck Teil einer transnationalen Forscher:innengruppe zum Werk des jiddischen Dichters Avrom Nochem Stenzl, der entscheidende Jahre seines Lebens (1921—1936) in Berlin verbrachte. Außerdem erarbeitet Beck, basierend auf unerforschten jiddischen Quellen, über das Jahr 2025 eine kollektive künstlerische Forschung unter dem Namen MILI zur Anarchafeministin Milly Witkop, die mit Unterstützung des Projektfonds Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg im November des Jahres in einer Ausstellung präsentiert wurde.
